Requiem for a Tree
This series chronicles the slow demise of the live oak in front of our house. We live in a maritime forest, and this beautiful tree loses limb after limb in storms, given that the rising waters erode its root system.
Requiem for a Tree #3
24 x 24 x 0.75 inches
A large branch broke off during high winds in a winter storm. The crack was audible in the house. The next morning, I photographed it as it lay in the water. The fragmented character of the piece emphasizes the relentless disintegration of the tree.
Requiem for a Tree #2
12 x 16 x 0.75 inches
This branch—photographed in 2021—no longer exists. All that remains are images and memories. The dense stitching forms a barrier while also mending the fabric, the tearing of which reflects the breaking apart of the tree.
