Albemarle Soundscapes
Since 2020, we live predominantly at the shores of the Albemarle Sound in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I am moved by this environment and its rich yet fragile beauty. Water and sand offer a liminal space wherein plants, birds, and snakes find shelter and food. Man-made structures—whether dilapidated duck blinds or wave breakers—add to its topography. It is as stunningly beautiful when the water glitters in the sunlight as when it churns in a coastal storm, accompanied by thunder and lightning.
In many of these works, I integrate manipulated photographs into layered textile art, adding representational fragments to my mostly abstract artistic language. I create the cloth for these works through printing and painting, merging different media with stitch.
